Cassiber - The Way It Is

Cassiber - The Way It Is

Niepublikowane nagrania zespołu Chrisa Cutlera i Heinera Goebbelsa, z lat 1982 - 1992. These are great recordings that paint the best – and most devil-take-the-hindmost – picture of this extraordinary, groundbreaking band. The sound is exemplary and the music constantly thinks around corners. Plus you have all the complexity and serendipity of live interaction and spontaneous rearrangement; you can hear the band is having a good time, even when some of the sounds seem to come out of nowhere. It’s a radical programme, all the more so for its shifts between organised noise, rhythmical intensity, lyricism, cultural debris and semantic complexity. OK I’m biased, but when I finished putting this together it was like finishing a new Cassiber CD and, arguably, the best of them. You really get a picture of what the group was made of. There’s also the pleasure of guests Dietmar Diesner and Rene Lussier on two tracks. This release will be included in the Cassiber Box, which is almost there but ...

Fred Frith - Field Days

Fred Frith - Field Days

14 pieces originally written for dance and other practical situations, here reassigned and reconstructed for choreographer Amanda Miller and the Nederland Dans Theater. These are loop-based, textural, mood pieces, and invocations of spaces and landscapes, with some fine steel guitar playing. Mostly this is Fred multi-instrumenting, with pianist Daan Vanderwalle, percussionist Willie Wynant, the Arte Sax quartet and Lotte Anker, the Arditti Quartet, Kiku Day, occasional shakuhachi, and violinist/nykelharpist Karla Kihlstedt. Hit from the show: Desert Sundown....

Fred Frith - Propaganda

Fred Frith - Propaganda

Written for theatre in 1987 using a host of avian and mammalian voices, snippets of unidentified musical material and electroacoustic noise- sculpting, as well as invented and real instruments played by Fred. This was a hard time and the mood is intense, lean and not cheerful, though there are some gruesomely cheery inserts. There’s no fat but a lot of meat here....

Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra ‎- Horizon

Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra ‎- Horizon...

In 1971 Sun Ra and the full Arkestra of the time went to Egypt. Three Saturn LPs were released memorialising this visit: Horizon was the last (it has also been known as Starwatchers and Sun Ra in Egypt Vol.2). It's a fine recording of a classic band - in great shape here -and comprises a big chunk of the now legendary Balloon Theatre concert (there's more on the companion CD Nidhamu). The first three tracks (what was side 1 of the LP) form a continuous uncut block, and feature a lot of Ra's all-hell-let-loose Moog soloing, some (borrowed)Tiger Organ, and a great version of Discipline 2. Side 2 kicks off with an instrumental version of Enlightment, (restored in its place from the original concert. It was not on the original LP) segueing slowly into Space is the Place - followed by drum orchestra, more solo Moog (bloops, hoovers, whistles, concords taking off, insect hordes.) which leads to a first lurching, then wild, Discipline 8. There are two bonus tracks, heard for the first time he...

Sun Ra & His Myth Science Solar Arkestra - The Antique Blacks

Sun Ra & His Myth Science Solar Arkestra...

Another much sought after and long unavailable title recorded in 1974 with a smallish ensemble consisting (probably) of stalwarts Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, Danny David, James Jacson, Akh Tal Ebah, Clifford Jarvis, Artakatune, and new electric guitarist, Sly, that was released on Saturn in the same year. This sounds like a studio recording, carefully thought out - most of the compositions appear only on this record (apart from versions of Nature's God and Space is the Place), and include a chain of very interesting accompanied /interpolated) spoken texts: There is a Change in the Air, The Antique Blacks, The ridiculous "I" and the Cosmos "Me" - as well as a very long and scary coda to Space is the Place. Ra plays Rocksichord and Moog throughout (solo on track 7 and at the end of track 8). Theatrical and political; this is a fascinating release....

Sun Ra And His Omniverse Jet-Set Arkestra ‎- Beyond The Purple Star Zone / Oblique Parallax

Sun Ra And His Omniverse Jet-Set Arkestr...

Two related classic Saturn LP reissues on a single CD, both recorded at the Detroit Jazz Centre in 1980 and 1981 respectively. They share an excellent sound quality and great playing -- there's a classic version of 'Rocket No.9' and plenty of otherworldly Moog and electronic keyboards -- it's up there with Ra's best on record. 'Rocket' excepted, all the pieces are original to these LPs and don't appear elsewhere, though the first track of Purple Star Zone is heard again at the end, with another name (exactly as it was on the 2 LPs), so it was clearly much liked by the boss. These were 10-14 piece bands, featuring the regulars, including June Tyson, and some visiting guests. The first LP features prominent electric guitar (not identified in the personnel list on the CD, but every listing I've seen for these LPs is different; this one should be fairly accurate in general, since the promoter helped to get the CD together). A fine release, touched with greatness and with a good sound. Come...

Sun Ra ‎- Space Probe - A Tonal View Of Times Tomorrow, Vol. 1

Sun Ra ‎- Space Probe - A Tonal View Of ...

An unusual record, mostly recorded in the early ‘60s with Ra, Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, James Jacson, Nimrod Hunt and Thea Barbara that explores stripped back forms and colour combinations - very far from jazz - and includes the extraordinary Conversation Of J.P. for piano and percussion. This and the opening track - probably recorded in 1970 - an 18-minute Moog solo, made just after Ra had newly acquired the instrument and was putting it through its paces, would make this an essential release in the Sun Ra canon – even without the rest of this excellent CD. Nice cover too, as usual....

Art Bears - Hopes and Fears

Art Bears - Hopes and Fears

The first Art Bears LP, mostly made by the band formerly known as Henry Cow and completed by Fred Frith, Chris Cutler and Dagmar Krause who went on, as '[Art Bears', to investigate this short song format further over the next two years, once Henry Cow had ceased to exist. Experimenting with the song form and the productive possibilities of the recording studio, this was hailed in its time (1978) as a landmark recording, and has been constantly in demand ever since. Therefore this new version, re-mastered by Bob Drake, and sounding for the first time like the original tapes. Repackaged. 1. On Suicide 1:27       2. The Dividing Line 4:11       3. Bob Drake - Lawn Ornaments

Bob Drake - Lawn Ornaments

After Bob's Drive-In, which, in terms of production was quite restrained and minimal, Ornaments sets off in the opposite direction, piling up great car-crashes of overlapping fragments in a production that makes rococo look like shaker minimalism. Playing only drums, guitars, bass, banjo, fiddle, organ, trumpet and piano Bob herds tamed cataclysms of musical debris into the shapes of coherent - if episodic – songs, en route skipping through half a century of recording history. As to method well, you can’t beat a year of work. The CD comes with a beautifully illustrated booklet that includes all the song texts as well as eighteen commissioned drawings by the meticulous fine-artist Joe Mruk. Extraordinary music, intriguingly wrapped...Bob Drake:My 8th solo album. Since my previous album had a deliberately stripped-down production, the moment I finished it I wanted to do an "overproduced" album. This was the starting point and general direction for Lawn Ornaments. It is very dense, yet s...

Slap Happy & Henry Cow - Desperate Straights

Slap Happy & Henry Cow - Desperate Strai...

(Henry Cow Definitive Reissue series No. 4) In 1974, Henry Cow took a sabbatical while it considered what to do next. SlappHappy meanwhile was planning its second record for Virgin. One night the trio showed up at the quartet's door and proposed that the two groups make the second Slapphappy LP together. So incompatible - Slapphappy was making eccentric pop songs and Henry Cow was composing complex epic instrumentals - so how could a merger fail? Henry Cow jumped at the chance and Desperate Straights -was the result. It's still a gem to my ears, and now at last it's possible to release it, properly re-mastered (by Bob Drake), its sound closer to the original tapes even than our earlier Nimbus vinyl pressing. Great songs, great arrangements, great performances and Dagmar on top of her form... real people in a room together, playing straight to tape. Those were the days.. Fred Frith - Live in Japan

Fred Frith - Live in Japan

Concert recordings made at various venues in Japan in 1981 and released by Recommended Records Japan in 1982 in an edition of 1000. Out of print since, though highly sought after, it has now been transferred and remastered by Tom Dimuzio for this official reissue. Fred was just starting out on his long career as a solo improviser when he made this double LP, and still using the now long retired Charles Fletcher custom double-neck guitar (one fretted, one fretless) and the Burns Black Bison, as well as a pilot's throat mike, a violin and (at one venue) the house piano. Some great music - and an historic and important document....
